How to balance a pear shaped/ bottom heavy figure

Balance Figure with Colour, Fitted Pieces

You can wear a fitted suit, even with a slim skirt, if you are bottom heavy. Just remember:

·         Keep the line long by using all one colour with slim-cut pieces. It elongates and slims the figure.

·         Choose fitted jackets that end well above your widest point.

·         Wear a top or jacket with structured shoulders, puffy sleeves,

·         Rely on a form-fitting, but never tight, skirt in a non-clingy fabric.

Think Fit and Flare

One of the classic recommendations for the bottom-heavy figure is the full skirt. It’s still a great option, especially for dresses. How to make the full skirt work:

·         Go for a fit and flare silhouette. Draw attention to the waist with a belt, gathers, band or other feature. The skirt should flare out from the fitted waist.

·         Take the fit and flare silhouette one step further by opting for a strapless dress. You’ll get the benefit of showing off your shoulders, while concealing your hips. Also, the strong line of bare shoulders helps balance a wider bottom half.

Find Jeans that flatter

You can look great in jeans. The key is to choose leg openings and back pockets to fit your figure. Here’s how:

·         Boot cut leg openings are the most flattering jean legs of all. The slight flare balances out wider hips and fuller thighs.

·         Opt for a darker wash jean for the most slimming look.

·         Five-pocket styling looks best, but you’ll want to avoid excessive embellishment

·         The longer the jeans, the longer (and thinner) your legs look. Wear boot cut jeans as long as you possibly can without having them bunch up around your legs. If you can stand them, pair jeans with high heels for a super-flattering look.

Put Prints on Your Smallest Feature

Another way to balance the bottom-heavy figure is to accentuate your top half with prints. Vertical stripes, menswear checks or plaids, floral and polka dots are all great options.

Wear a solid pant or skirt and keep jackets short (never let a jacket end right at the widest point of your hips).

·         Go for a Raised Waist

·         If your natural waistline is thick, along with full hips and thighs, one of your best options in dresses is the empire-waist (raised waist) dress.

With this silhouette, the focus is shifted to only the top third of your body because the waist falls right below the bust line. This look works best with pear-shaped women who are small-busted.

Pick a Pretty Neckline

You don’t need a plunging V-neck or tons of cleavage to pull this off. What you do need is added interest such as a sweetheart neckline, a halter, a knotted front — to draw attention up and towards your face.

Light on Top, Dark on Bottom

As basic as it sounds, the best way to use colour to camouflage/highlight figure areas is to use contrasts.  The black bottom with white top works like a dream: it brings the eye up to the lightest hue and the top half of the body.

Lingerie Care Guide

Most manufacturers suggest intimates be washed in a lingerie wash bag, which are often made of light synthetic mesh.  By using a lingerie wash bag, you ensure that your intimates avoid the rough and tumble wash cycles and do not get twisted and stretched among any other wash items.

Here are some general care instructions:

DO:

Wash: Wash in cold water by hand, making sure to rinse thoroughly. If you prefer to wash in the machine, wash in cold water with like colours or separately always using a lingerie wash bag. ALWAYS wash colours separately, including similar lingerie products. Remember to hook, fasten or buckle products before you wash.

Dry: Drip dry or dry flat washed lingerie items, away from sunlight. If you must dry in the machine, tumble dry on a low and cool setting with items still in the lingerie wash bag.

Dry clean: If your tag denotes dry cleaning, you should always do so without fail. This instruction usually means that the fabric and structure of the item cannot sustain traditional washing methods or products.

DON’T:

Wash: Avoid washing you lingerie loosely with other products. Because of their delicate structure, many lingerie items can get twisted and stretched in this process. Avoid soaking or bleaching intimates in order to retain colour and structure. Also avoid detergents you normally use with your other laundry.

Dry: Do not tumble dry loosely with other products. Once again, your items may twist and stretch. Also, avoid line drying, as creases and stretching may occur. Keep your intimates out of the sun!  And, do not iron your lingerie. If absolutely necessary, use gentle steaming to remove wrinkles. Lastly, our girdles and waist cinchers will stretch out, in less than one year. Pulling in your tummy is important, and a girl must buy a new/tight/ girdle each year. A bra, girdle or cincher that is stretched out, is simply worthless.

Getting Dressed Up

Here are a few fail safe tips:

– You can never go wrong in a little black or red dress.

– I love dressed-up denim. Dark wash jeans paired with a shiny or embellished top makes a great look for an afternoon event.

– Pair things you never would for a completely different look; mix fancy pieces with everyday items. Do a dressy top with jeans or a gray flannel pant with a silky top, Instant party outfit!

If you’re going to buy something, buy one special thing that will get you through more than just one season. No guilt if it’s a piece you’ll wear forever.

– An on-trend handbag or a shoe automatically updates your look. For extra oomph, try a satin shoe in a bright color.

Consider a clutch. Yes, this trend will be around for a long time.

Anything metallic goes. Clothing, shoes, bags, accessories—you name it. They’re classic and seasonless—and all over the spring 2009 runways.

Don’t rule out pants: The tuxedo suit is a great party outfit. Wear it as a suit, or the pant or jacket alone.

Accessories

– The number one accessory is a statement necklace. For a vintage feeling, wear one with a lot of rhinestones.

Big bangles. No need to splurge either—Claire’s Accessories is great for these types of things.

A big, giant cocktail ring. They’re everywhere!

Go big and bold with hair accessories. Feathered clips are in! It’s an instant way to be glamourous without spending a lot of money.

If you do go with a statement hairpiece, keep the jewelry to a minimum. You don’t want them to compete.

  What to Avoid

A matching set of jewelry. If you go with the statement necklace, skip the earrings (or wear a small, simple pair); if you wear large earrings, skip the bold necklace.

– You should never look like you tried too hard. You want to present a notched up version of YOU!
